As well as installing screw piles across most of the UK, we have also completed numerous projects on the Isle of Wight in the last 12 months. Our latest project has just finished on the island and it was a great test for the team.
Approached by our client many months ago to help him with his new build project to overcome ground issues and come up with a cost effective solution from the original plan issued by his engineer.
The client had previously excavated a large amount of the proposed site, cutting into the sloping bank to create a flat oversite ready for us to plot out our pile locations, install shuttering on both the new house and garage plan.
Our remit on this project was to arrive to a pre-prepared site by the client. On both the new house and garage, our team were tasked to install shuttering, install our screw piles to the required marked out locations, then lay a specialist clay heave (designed to counteract any upward forces imposed on the ground and slab as the clay substrate contracts and expands with varying moisture levels), then A393 mesh layers - to be finished with poured concrete to create a reinforced 'floating' slab.
This site posed numerous problems, the two main factors that were a constant source of delay were access and severe weather conditions. Neither of which we could control.
Access was notably difficult as the site was down a winding track with a sharp, almost dogleg turn which meant the requirement of specialist transport arrangements in order to get the screw piles and large amounts of clay heave, A393 mesh on site. As you can imagine, shipping over to the Isle Of Wight means travelling on the ferry which proposes its own logistic issues.
Our second and hardest issue to deal with was the weather conditions towards the last month or so. Constant rain for days on end meant the site flooded, as well as washing away half of the main access lane, making it hard to get machinery and deliveries on site.
Finally we caught a break of a week of dry weather and we managed to get all the parties involved for one day! We could finally get the concrete lorries on site for a long day of pouring the reinforced concrete slab for the house and the garage.
Our completion of this project was marked with a glorious sunny day for installation of concrete, a happy customer and another project successfully completed by Ultimate Screw Piling on the Isle of Wight.
