Licoricia Statue, Winchester, Hampshire
During 2022, USP were approached by an existing client to help them with a very sensitive project. We as a company were more than happy to help with and it was one that was a first for us as a company.
Our client wanted us to create a specialist designed foundation platform that would be the mounting base for an important statue near the city centre of Winchester. The statue was of Licoricia; she was a successful businesswoman and a prominent member of Winchester's medieval Jewish community.
She was highly educated and became one of the foremost Jewish moneylenders in Winchester – with regular dealings with royalty including Henry III and other nobility in southern England.
Our task was to design a foundation solution that would offer the right structural integrity for a tall and heavy bronze statue.
We excavated the site, installed our screwpiles, put in shuttering that would house the concrete pour, that would encase the specially designed structural mesh. Once we poured the concrete, it was then finished off with a marble facade, before the statue was mechanically fixed into our plinth.
She was unveiled to the public on the 10th of February 2022. During March HRH King Charles visited the site following his recovery of Covid.
We are truly honoured to work with on this project.
